It’s no secret that “Avatar” has been stunningly successful on nearly every front. The James Cameron-directed sci-fi epic is already the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time, having earned more than $1 billion around the globe in less than three weeks of theatrical release. The film also has garnered effusive praise from critics, who’ve been planting its flag on a variety of critics Top 10 lists (it has earned an impressive 83 score on Rotten Tomatoes). The 3-D trip to Pandora is also viewed as a veritable shoo-in for a best picture Oscar nomination when the academy announces its nominees on Feb. 2.

One of the most extraordinary features of Barack Obama’s victory over John McCain was his capture of 78% of the Jewish vote. To be sure, there was nothing extraordinary about the number itself. Since 1928, the average Jewish vote for the Democrat in presidential elections has been an amazing 75%—far higher than that of any other ethno-religious group.

Yet there were reasons to think that it would be different in 2008
The main one was Israel.
Nevertheless, Mr. Obama beat Mr. McCain among Jewish voters by a staggering 57 points.
Mr. Obama did far better with Jews than with any other ethnic or religious group. Thus the Jewish vote for him was 25 points higher than the 53% he scored with the electorate as a whole

As a Jew who moved from left to right more than four decades ago, I have been hoping for many years that my fellow Jews would come to see that in contrast to what was the case in the past, our true friends are now located not among liberals, but among conservatives.

A voice of sanity is now emerging on the right over President Obama’s stay-in-school speech tomorrow: Newt Gingrich.

Gingrich put up this Twitter post this afternoon, after the White House released the text of the speech:

Just read President Obamas speech to students.white House posted it. it is a good speech and will be good for students to hear

And he followed it up with this:

Remember that Presidents Reagan and Bush also talked to students nationwide. As long as it is non political and pro education it is good

I can appreciate there’s a question of whether the Department of Education erred in the wording of one sentence in the supplementary materials. It’s reasonable to think officials should have been more cautious.

But that’s not what this is about. The administration not only edited the supplementary materials, but has offered to make the text of the address available in advance, just so everyone can see how innocuous it is. It’s made no difference. Conservatives don’t want school kids to hear a message from their president. Those who claim superiority on American patriotism have decided to throw yet another tantrum over the idea that the president of the United States might encourage young people to do well in schools.
